"Shockingly bad - I walked out"

About: Southampton General Hospital

Last week I was taken to Southampton hospital in the early hours of the morning via ambulance after waking up hemorrhaging following a tonsillectomy (day 2 post op) I waited for nearly 3 hours in A&E I was admitted to the ENT ward where I was seen fairly quickly by a doctor who advised a course of treatment - regular mouthwash to stem the bleeding and clear the blood clots and was advised that I would receive pain relief and be monitored as blood hemorrhaging of any kind was very serious. For the next six hours I laid in a bed in a ward with a curtain pulled round me. I didn't see a nurse, no one checked on me, I buzzed for a nurse several times asking for pain relief and didn't receive any. I didn't receive the mouthwash to clear the blood clots. The only person who did come to me was the tea lady, offering me a hot drink - which I should not have been offered as it would have not been good for the hemorrhaging. For those of you who know how painful an adult tonsillectomy is, I'm sure you can imagine the pain I was in - bad enough on its own without the hemorrhaging. In the end, I called my husband to collect me, I was crying in pain and could not last another minute in that hospital with a complete lack of care - it was nothing short of negligence. We drove to Winchester A&E and I sat and waited my turn there and received the medical attention that I should have received at Southampton.

Thank you for your feedback and I am very sorry to read of your poor experience on one of our wards. Please be assured that this will be passed to the matron for review and appropriate action with the ward concerned. I do hope that you are now making a good recovery from your tonsillectomy.
