About: Macclesfield District General Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

They listened to me and took my pain seriously admitting me immediately. The nurses made sure my pain was under control and that I was comfortable. When allowed to eat, the choices were excellent and extremely tasty. I noticed that the nurses & doctors constantly washed their hands in the on ward sink and used gloves. I would recommend Macc District Hospital to anyone - an extremely pleasant stay. THANK YOU!

What could be improved

Flexible visiting hours. My partner had to wait around for over 2 hours whilst I was given the clearance to go home but had to wait this amount of time for my prescription, this needs to be improved, other than that I can't think of anything else that should be improved.

We are very encouraged to read that you were impressed with the way hospital staff listened to you and helped control your pain. According to the National A&E survey 2008, 82% of patients at Macclesfield Hospital felt that staff did all they could to control pain. Patients responding to the survey rated us amongst the top performing 20% of trusts for staff listening to patients.

We are especially pleased that you noticed doctors and nurses constantly washing their hands. This is a very important priority at the Trust and we do all that we can to encourage and remind people of the importance of hand hygiene. We survey patients on all wards every month to check on cleanliness and staff handwashing.

It is also good to read that you enjoyed the food during your stay. Our catering department regularly win awards and score highly in patient surveys.

We would like to answer your comment about flexible visiting hours. The Trust has set visiting times to ensure that patients get the care they need and their meals at the right time. However visits outside these times can be arranged with the ward staff in certain circumstances, for example if the visitor helps to feed the patient or if the visitor is traveling a long distance to get to the hospital.

Please accept our apologies for having to wait to go home and to get your prescription. Ward staff need to be absolutely certain that a patient is well enough to go home, and sometimes this can take time, particularly if it is busy on the ward. We are currently running a project to improve discharge for patients, with a big focus on making discharge quicker and easier.

Thank you for recommending Macclesfield Hospital.
