"Thinking outside the box"

(as a relative),

My mother in law had a severe stroke and I travelled from Australia to be with her.

She is making small steps everyday but the nurse allowed me to be with her outside normal visiting hours. This allowed me to spend a maximum amount of time with her during my stay but also to be able to connect her to her son and daughter via audio Skype so that she can hear their voices.

If Megan had not allowed me to visit outside visiting hours it would have been very difficult as I'm a 2 hour drive away.

I can't thank Megan enough for being so caring as to allow me to visit when I could, she made all the difference to me and her son and daughter back in Australia.

Thank you for taking the time to share this, I was sorry to hear of your mother in law's situation but pleased to hear you were able to make the trip to see her.

We will shortly be making some changes to our visiting times across the Board to make it easier for folks to have more time with their loved ones. What you describe however is what we would expect staff to do and that is to consider what is important to the person and their family. It seems like such a small thing and yet it makes such a huge difference!

Isn't technology wonderful in its ability to connect folks across the miles, I am so glad that Megan helped to make this happen!

It would be good to give Megan this feedback and also to share it with the team to reinforce the importance of this kind of approach. If you could identify the specific area this would be helpful.Many thanks for sharing.

Hiya, she was Megan on ward 42, acute stroke ward in the victoria hospital, Kirkcaldy. I left a thank you card for her so she knew what a difference she made, but would love for this to be shared further afield as it is a very positive story, thanks

I was heartened to read your comments about Ward 42 at Victoria Hospital in relation to your Mother in Law's care recently. We strive to offer person centred care and the flexibility shown to you and your family is exactly in line with that ambition. It is not always easy to achieve, so it is really good to get feedback that it has worked.

We have used Skype before to connect a patient with family abroad and that worked well on that occasion also, as you say it makes all the difference.

I know it is a little while since you first posted your comments so I hope your Mother in Law continues to make a good recovery.
