"The nursing staff in A and E were ..."

About: Royal Oldham Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The nursing staff in A and E were pleasant, helpful and busy. They did their best on a very busy day (Thursday 5th Feb)

What could be improved

Communication could be better. I returned on Friday morning to be told my wrist needed resetting but not until Sunday at the earliest. When I suggested I use my private medical insurance I was told by the doctor on call that he did not do private medicine but there was a good chance of my being treated by him on Sunday morning. At 8 a.m.gowned and ready, the same doctor informs me that he cannot do it. He might do it Monday but he cannot promise. I decided to use my private insurance. The doctor then said that perhaps he could do it and he would get his secretary to phone me in the morning. She didn't. This exchange left me puzzled.

I also think that,if the operation could not be done on the Sunday, a simple phonecall could have saved the journey.

Anything else?

I do not want to make a formal complaint. It is a busy hospital but it is wrong to leave a patient with an untreated painful fractured wrist for 5 days without even a definite prospect of treatment. Anyone who could not make their own arrangements would be quite desperate.

Thank you for your kind comments about our nursing staff in A&E.

We were concerned to hear of the confusion around your subsequent visits. We will enquire into the problems which you experienced and will respond to you direct in the near future.
