"In house politics not patient centred care"

I am remain very disappointed at the care my (fit) 81yr old mother has and is receiving from firstly the medical staff (after an extended stay on ward 37) and then the Orthopaedic Team firstly that headed by Mr J Braybrook and that headed by two consultants. She was sent by her GP at the beginning of June 2014 to Medical Triage unwell with abnormal blood results, plus a 6yr old hip replacement that was swollen and tender. Although the hip had caused problems with pain before she had never been 'unwell' thus her GP felt it may be a medical issue as opposed to orthopaedic. Hence the referral. What ensued (and lasted for 16 days - who is an in patient for 16 days and discharged as unwell as when they were admitted?) was an argument about just whose patient was she (not that she was unwell). Diagnostic tests were booked by one lots of medical staff and cancelled by the other. Her IV (antibiotics) stopped working becoming swollen and painful on ward 37 and she was told (by an HCA) that there was no-one to put another in, the inference being if it was taken out it would be her fault (all she said was it was very painful). The HCA added 'she was difficult to cannulate' I don't know how she was able to make this clinical assessment as it wasn't anything she was qualified to do? I had to complain (my Mum was in tears and in pain) and the staff member was very confident in the rude manner that she spoke to my mother, repeating her 'advice' loudly and more than once. My Mum was eventually transferred to an Orthopaedic ward but only after they had tried to discharge her home with an intermittent fever and abnormal blood results with the advice see your GP. She was discharged shortly after from the Orthopaedic Ward (18) still with abnormal blood results, feeling unwell and a painful swollen hip, with the advice see your GP, which she has done because she is still unwell and remains unwell. She was to see a consultant today in the fracture clinic at LRI (an appointment he made), we waited nearly 2hrs from the appointment time to be told he was 'on leave' and the Registrar that we did see said he couldn't make a decision so she will have to come back next week. My Mother has sat waiting at his clinic at Glenfield Hospital to hear the Nurse phone him to 'remind' him to come to his clinic, the Registrar today said he had been trying to phone him about my Mum, which was probably why we sat and waited nearly 2hrs, but he wasn't 'picking up'. My Uncle has sat waiting for him in a clinic (for his knee) where he hasn't turned up at all and the clinic was cancelled. I have no faith at all in the LRI. If you don't fall into a speciality then it would seem no-one is interested in making a diagnosis just fobbing you off to someone else, or is just because you are old? I am a Nurse (quite a senior one, letters after my name and everything) and am ashamed of how my Mother is being treated at LRI even though I don't work there.
