"Delivery of my baby"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was admitted into hospital after my waters breaking at 36. 5 weeks pregnant and was told to go to the mcu unit within Medway.

I was checked over and told I was around 1-2cm dilated so still had a long way to go. I was told I was being admitted to Pearl ward to wait for my labour to further. My only grumble is that it took around 3 hours to actually get somebody to take me there, but by the time a porter was around to take me my labour had progressed very quickly and I was around 7-8cm so they sent me straight to the delivery suite.

The nurses in mcu were very comforting and thought my contraction faces were hilarious which made it all a little bit better I was taken to the delivery suite and there I was checked straight away and all the staff that saw to me were amazing.

The midwife I had, who I believe was called Sam, was outstanding and very much helped me through. Unfortunately I didn't have a straightforward birth and I had to have assistance by forceps. The obstetrician who dealt with this, I believe called John, was also outstanding and done a really good job at talking me through everything and making sure I understood and was very professional.

The only downfall was the lady who I think was in charge of the unit didn't even know my name which I found very impersonal considering I was in full blown labour and kept asking people my name and calling me everything but my name, and was just screaming unnecessarily, which whilst your in full blown labour is not helpful at all.

Thumbs up to all the other staff though! I was then taken onto Pearl ward and despite the tiny cramped conditions all staff were amazing and very helpful! I felt very at ease, so thank you to all those who made it what it was: )

Thank you very much for taking the time to offer us your feedback during such a busy time with a new born baby.

I would like the opportunity to follow up on your comment about the midwife in charge of the unit so that I can give her some feedback and put any actions into place to prevent other mothers feeling this way.

In order for me to do that would it be possible for you to contact me on 01634 825157 or e mail me at karen.mcintyre@medway.nhs.uk so that we can discuss further.

Kind regards

Karen McIntyre

Head of Midwifery
