"Great staff but a non sterile procedure"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Great staff in department great staff nurse, I am a nurse myself and I was concerned when healthcare assistant cleaned and dressed my wound non antiseptically - think its important if there job is to clean wounds and take out patients cannula s they are trained to use dressing packs and sterile gloves or any gloves would be better as the healthcare assistant used bare hands to clean and dress my wound then took out my cannula not even any alcohol gel or hand washing

Hi

I can only agree this is terrible practice. I will ensure our infection prevention link nurse is aware and we will organise some training as a matter of urgency. Please be reassured this will not happen again. We share all lessons learnt and this will be shared very widely with all members of our team so they are able to challenge poor practice with confidence.
