I have been unwell for nearly four years with ME or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, an illness for which services in the NHS are extremely rare. We're lucky to have a dedicated Nurse Specialist in Fife and I've relied on his advice and guidance a great deal as my illness has developed and fluctuated. I think he's also been a great help to my GP who is very good but sometimes benefits from the experience that the Specialist Nurse brings. The help isn't just medical: I've had masses of help with insurance and retirement paperwork, which must be a pain for him to complete but he has done so very graciously. My only complaint? We need far more of this sort of thing - ME/CFS is seriously under-resourced, especially when you consider the impact it has on the economy as many patients have to retire in the middle of full and productive careers.
