I very rarely write reviews but feel driven to do so for two reasons: firstly in view of the previous reviews, and secondly because of the recognition that should be given to all staff on Blickling Ward. My husband was admitted on 26th April 2014, very late in the evening, and this initial contact with staff was very reassuring and comforting. I visited the ward very regularly over a period of 9 weeks whilst my husband was being assessed. The ward was always clean, warm, inviting and well staffed and I, personally, always received a friendly greeting, and nothing I asked for or suggested was ever too much trouble, from providing refreshments to updating me regarding my husbands condition. Yes, the ward was noisy on occasions, but that is to be expected and appreciated given the demeanour of the residents who are being assessed and treated, but there are quiet rooms and ample outdoor space which can be utilised, which staff were always keen to suggest we could use if we wanted some private, quiet time. In addition, refurbishment has recently taken place to improve the facilities in this area. Regular discussions took place between staff and family regarding ongoing care. The issues with low blood pressure were constantly monitored, addressed and treated, as were other medical conditions. Unfortunately, my husband suffered a fall whilst on the ward, an incident which cannot be avoided unless kept as a prisoner under 24 hour observation. I was promptly notified and immediate and appropriate medical care was administered, necessitating a visit to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, and I was kept informed of his progress. Whilst there my husband was encouraged to engage in activities and staff often spent time sitting and talking on a 1-1 basis. Staff went out of their way to help my husband remain independent with personal tasks eg: personal hygiene and eating/drinking, and were always very quick to respond when assistance and aids were required, whilst remaining respectful and preserving his dignity. If I felt the need to ring the ward, which I was actively encouraged to do and I did on several occasions, without exception the staff I spoke to always provided helpful, friendly advice and information. The final assessment and discharge process was dealt with effectively and efficiently, involving the family and being very receptive of our thoughts and feelings. I cannot fault the care, attention and treatment that was given to my husband during his time on Blickling Ward, by all staff whatever their grade or role. Their dedication and professionalism was exemplary and enthusiasm for their work very encouraging, in what can often be a very distressing environment and emotional circumstances. Finally, the time, comfort and support offered to me personally by staff contributed immensely to making this traumatic period in my life manageable and bearable and will never be forgotten. A huge thank you to all concerned, you are a truly deserving team.
