"A&E cleanliness"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary

Unfortunately I attend A&E on 2 July with my husband. I was extremely disappointed by the level of cleanliness of the department. The public toilets were extremely dirty giving the appearance of not being cleaned for some time, certainly not hourly as I understand is supposed to happen. The cleanliness of the cubicles my husband was seen in was poor. For example the floor was dirty, the clinical waste bin appeared not to have been cleaned outside - ever. A small amount of blood was spilt on the floor when my husband was cannulated. The nurse doing the procedure covered the blood with 2 paper towels and walked away. I pointed this out to the customer relations gentleman when he came into the cubicle an hour later and he immediately cleaned it up himself. At no time did I observe any member of staff who had contact with my husband wash / cleanse their hands either before or after contact. I appreciate that this is a busy department but it gives completely the wrong impression and if infection levels are to be reduced in the NHS a lot more work needs to be done at this hospital.

We are sorry to learn that the cleanliness in the Emergency Department and the infection control standards you experienced were unacceptable and not in line with the high standards we aim to provide.

The Matrons in the Emergency Department meet weekly with our partners Sodexo, who undertake the cleaning of our hospital, to address any concerns that are identified with the standard of cleanliness within the department. The standards are monitored daily by the Matrons to ensure and issues are resolved and identified improvements are consistent.

We were also disappointed to learn that the staff who cared your husband did not comply with the infection control measures that we expect, particularly hand washing. Hand hygiene is a basic requirement of all staff and audits are undertaken in the department on a regular basis to ensure that staff are compliant with the expected standards.

Please accept our assurance that cleanliness and infection control are our priority and we will continue to ensure that we provide healthcare in a clean, safe environment. We hope the information provided assures you that we are taking the concerns you have raised seriously.

If you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Services on 0161 276 8686 or by emailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk
