"The only positive thing I can ..."

About: Bedford Hospital South Wing

(as a relative),

What I liked

The only positive thing I can think of is the little house which offers overnight accommodation to families of critically ill patients. This is a good idea.

What could be improved

The attitude of some of the nurses towards close family of victims. It may be normal for them to see people going through tough experiences but it doesn't make it any easier for the family of a patient.

Anything else?

My father was admitted to Bedford South Wing this January and told without the presence of any of his family that he had not more than a week to live by the doctor attending to him. When our whole family were there looking after him we were refused ice cubes to cool him down in his seriously ill state, the reason being that ice cubes were for use with epidurals. When we requested a private room for him to stay in during his last few days we were denied it as the nurses stipulated that they were only used for infectious cases. To die with only a curtain around your bed is not by any stretch of the imagination even close to dignity in my mind. I am thoroughly disgusted with the way that my father was treated and the manner in which me and my family were neglected simply because everybody knew there was no cure. I hate to say it, but there seems to be a lack of dignity in the world now which is abhorrent. I was only 18 at the time, and to have to see your father die in front of you is bad enough, but to be met with indifference by a nurse too busy having a tea break to bother responding to a buzzer is unacceptable. It is hard to see the positives of a National Health System such as this.
