"Knee replacement and stayed on Tye Green Ward"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

I came out of hospital on recently following a full knee replacement and stayed on Tye Green ward. I was in a side room and I felt there was just not enough nursing staff to go around! I was only up from my op for 15 mins when I started to be sick so rung for a nurse and had to wait for at least 5 mins before anyone came to me, she was very apologetic and said they were so short staffed and had so many post ops to look after! I also found that there more nursing assistants then qualified nurses, also some of the qualified nurses sometimes didn't understand me because English was not their first language. I also found that some of the nursing assistants were really moaning about the other nurses and complained that they were doing all the work! On my discharge letter that I have to take to my doc to have staples removed they have hand written a note to have staples removed from my hip replacement! I also feel the physio was a not non existent too, yes they came every day for literally a few minutes and got me walking but then just left me to my own devices! I was given a piece of paper t show exercises but not once did they go through them with me! I had to keep asking for ice packs too to ease with the pain. On a positive note, my op went very well, my surgeon and his team were excellent and the staff in the operating theatre were fantastic especially calming me down because I was so nervous and scared! Overall I would recommend this hospital to anyone but I really do feel that the staffing levels on this ward is really bad and all staff are so pushed to their limits everyday and every shift.

Dear Anonymous, It is very positive to read that you would recommend the hospital, but equally disappointing to see that you felt so little time was spent with you post operatively. This is something the Trust is working hard to address and the organisation is planning to invest a significant sum in front-line clinical care over this next year with more nursing staff being recruited and a shift towards more frequent face to face contact with patients. I hope you are making a good recovery and wish you well. If you do feel in future that you would like to raise a concern or have any unanswered questions please get in touch on 01279 82 70 84. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment.
