"Emergency admission to treat an abcess"

About: Kingston Hospital

Over a period of a week, I became aware of a growing abcess in my groin area and when it was apparent that the condition was getting significantly worse, I made an appointment through NHS111 to see a duty doctor at Kingston Hospital. I made the call at 11pm on Friday 20th June, the person I spoke to was courteous and helpful and assessed my symptoms quickly. The member of staff offered me a choice of local hospitals and times and made an appointment for me at Kingston for the following morning at 9am. This was followed up by a reminder call. I attended the surgery at Kingston Hospital at 9am on Saturday 21st June and was seen by the duty doctor who diagnosed by condition and prescribed antibiotics & pain killers but advised me to return to A&E if there was no significant improvement after 24 hours. By 3pm on Sunday 22nd June, I was still in great pain and decided to go to A&E. All the records were available and I was seen within one hour of arriving. The duty gynaecologist recommended surgery and I was allocated a bed for that evening. At 10am the following morning, Monday 23rd June, I was taken to theatre to have the abcess drained. I returned to the ward at 11.30am and checked over by several doctors and nurses. By 3pm I had shown sufficient recovery to be discharged and was given a further course of antibiotics plus a very comprehensive file detailing my treatment, the staff involved and what I should do following discharge. I have documented this in detail because I have the highest praise for the staff who treated me over the weekend. I would like to offer a huge 'thank you' to the hospital for looking after me so quickly and efficiently.
