"The nurses were lovely, apart ..."

About: Homerton University Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The nurses were lovely, apart from the head nurse who treated me like a piece of meat saying I had to get out of the hospital before 5pm - I was a day patient and had three procedures carried out on my nose. Her bedside manner was awful, awful, awful...

What could be improved

Bathroom was filthy. Afterservice was terrible. I was given virtually no advice as to possible side effects of the procedures carried out and spent following 5 weeks in absolute agony (headaches) going from one doctor to the next for help and stronger painkillers. Immediately after my operation, my nose was in no way 'packed' as is standard procedure and I was just handed a few gauze pieces (by guess who) and told to keep it clean. I had to take almost three weeks off work as the headaches were so severe. I think I went to 4 different doctors and built up an armoury of painkillers but nothing reduced the pain for more than 40 minutes. At one point I was on about 20 painkillers a day, mixing ibuprofen with codrydamol or co-codeine - basically trying anything that worked! One evening my temperature hit something dangerous and I was going to visit A&E but got good advice from NHS Direct. About six weeks after the operation, a blue stitch came out of my nose which was about 2.5 inches long - I had been told the stitches I had would break down naturally within a fortnight. The whole experience was horrendous.

Anything else?

I am sure there are many capable doctors and nurses in this hospital. Perhaps I was just unlucky but I would never, ever recommend anyone use the day clinic...
