"My younger brother was suffering ..."

About: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

My younger brother was suffering from terminal cancer when he collapsed, and was taken to the NHH. From the moment he was admitted until he died four days later, the care he received was second to none. When I became distressed on day three, my husband and I were spoken to so kindly, and it was explained to us that while my brother's life was coming to a close, everything would be done to make him as comfortable as possible in his final hours - he had made it quite plain that he did not wish his life to be prolonged, just to fade away gently. And so he did. All the staff were extremely supportive to those of his family who were involved, and I for one found it a great comfort. I was with both my parents when they died at the NHH; our other brother died there 3 years ago, also from cancer, so you will forgive me if I do not rush back to NHH!

What could be improved

Very little, as far as I could see, except that as my brother's next of kin, I would have wished to be contacted by telephone first, rather than get any news second hand from my sister in law - this was not only irritating, but also time consuming, since I live over 40 miles away, so needed to travel.

Anything else?

Although it is a busy hospital, with many patients and visitors, all with their own concerns, at no time did I feel I was being a nuisance asking questions, and the staff appeared so calm, nothing was too much trouble for them. Thank you all so much.
