"Being listened to"

About: NHS Grampian

(as a carer),

I have been in a very bad place over recent months, my wife has terminal cancer and I also have health issues. I attended an appointment at the health village. Staff were promoting carers week.

I approached a young girl called Heather. She immediately recognised I was very upset and took me to a private area with a seat. What she did for me was quite simple...she listened! We have had bad experiences getting a diagnosis both in hospital and our surgery. Heather gave me appropriate information relating to caring and cancer and local support for me. She also offered me a feedback form for NHS Grampian following me telling her about the bad experiences.

I have not filled this in, as I feel satisfied that someone caring has now listened to me. Thank-you

Dear Carer

NHS Grampian would like to thank you for taking the time to post this feedback. We recognise the important role that carers have but also that carers too need support. This must be a very difficult time for you. We are pleased that one of our staff was able to help. Your story also illustrates the value of events such as Carer's Week in raising the profile of carers and how important the simple act of listenng can be.

We are sorry to hear that there were problems in getting a diagnosis.

We will pass on your comments to the staff involved and thank you again for telling your story.

Kind regards from all at NHS Grampian.
