I attended Wishaw General Hospital in January of this year for an endoscopy of stomach. I arrived expecting to be seen by a doctor, but was dealt with by an excellent nursing staff. To my surprise the procedure was carried out by a specialist nurse, Debbie, who thoroughly explained how the procedure would be carried out, and how to communicate with her during the procedure should I encounter any difficulty.
I opted to have my throat sprayed rather than be sedated, more to see how she dealt with me rather than "braving it out". Debbie was fantastic throughout, displaying a level of expertise which surprised me, and her empathy was also amazing. I must congratulate whoever trained her, as they passed on their skills to someone who made good use of them, and it also spoke well of the selection processes involved in selecting and training specialist nurses.
I did put "pen to paper" to the head of the unit in an email, but was disappointed to learn later (June 2014) that my request to have my favourable comments passed onto Debbie and the staff in the Day Surgery Unit had not reached the staff concerned.
I find it just as easy to thank as it is to complain, but nowadays so many communications are of the latter format. People often forget to show appreciation of work well done. Well done Debbie and the staff at the Day Surgery Unit, Wishaw General Hospital.
"Thanks to staff at Wishaw endoscopy"
