"Special baby milk "

My baby son was extremely poorly from about 3 weeks old, after admission to hospital he was diagnosed with a cows milk allergy which meant that he could only use a specialist formula milk which could not be bought of the shelf, meaning that he had to be ordered at least 3 days in advance. The cost was also extremely expensive but we were told it was available on prescription thankfully.

However we were never seen directly by a dietician so had limited understanding of the condition as a result we used the internet to educate ourselves.

We had to constantly chase them up for the prescription, despite informing them how much we needed we were always on the back foot having to chase prescriptions and bunting additional tins in ourself so we were always certain we had some milk in.

Dear Rex, thank you for your feedback via Patient Opinion. We are sorry to hear that following your son’s diagnosis of a cow’s milk allergy, you felt you had limited understanding of the condition and had to constantly chase up for prescriptions.

For children diagnosed with a milk intolerance, a visit from a Dietician is only carried out if the Consultant/GP feel that a referral is required for dietary advice. Future supplies of the milk are also organised following notification to the Nutrition and Dietetics Department from the Clinicians. We are very sorry that in your experience, this process has not been helpful or smooth and your feedback has been passed on to the staff and departments concerned. If you are currently in need of further dietary advice, please contact your GP or Consultant.
