"Following my diagnosis for breast ..."

About: Barnsley Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Following my diagnosis for breast cancer, I was of course devasted & shocked, what followed was nothing short of amazing. My consultant told me sympathetically what the options were. I had a mastectomy with immediate re-constructive surgery on April 2nd, only five days later. the staff on the ward were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble; and the doctor came every day to see me. The results of my surgery are amazing, no-one would ever know. I can't speak highly enough of this man & his team, it has made the difference from despair to elation at having a 2nd chance & feeling normal as opposed to mutilated. I would recommend Barnsley Breast Unit before any other in the country. I got the results of the biopsy in 2 days, so no stressful waiting around., just excellent service & patient care. Thank you so much Barnsley Hospital (& Mr ElZiat).

What could be improved

I was in recovery for some 3-4 hours as I was being sick, during that time no-one could tell my husband what was going on. What they didn't know was that his father died in recovery & it did seem like deja vu, for that time he was extremely anxious to say the least. It would be very beneficial if the nurses on the ward were kept informed so that this information could be passed on to relatives. The nurses didn't know anything so couldn't tell him why I wasn't back on the ward after 7 hours. I understand that on occasions patients are cared for in recovery simply because there is no-one to bring them back to the ward until later. Fine but please let people know so they do not worry unnecessarily.

Thank you for your kind feedback which has been passed on to the breast services team. We are delighted you are so pleased with your treatment but have made a note of your concern over keeping relatives informed and apologise that we did not do so well on this occasion.

Did you know that Barnsley hospital also has a wide range of support services for women who have, or have had, breast cancer and these are explained on our website www.barnsleyhospital.nhs.uk Click on the 'hospital services' quick link button then choose 'breast services'.
