"Delay and mis-diagnosis at walk-in centre"

I visited the walk-in centre on 13 June at 3pm, and presented with several insect bites sustained 2 weeks earlier on holiday in the northern Dales. These has become very painful and badly inflamed, and had begun to spread on feet, right leg, and chest. The waiting time was about 2 hours, the first part of which was due, according to the reception clerk, to a computer problem . I was seen by a nurse ("consultant"?). I told her that I was using Anthisan cream to help control the irritation, and also that I have a history of adverse reaction to such bites.The nurse advised that she diagnosed the chest area inflammation as a fungal rash, and said it would clear up if treated with Caneston cream; she would not accept that it was from bites. For the legs and feet she recommended I continue to take the ant-histamine tablets which I had already purchased. The visit was in my view a waste of time. It certainly did not inspire confidence either in the system now in place, which is much slower and less efficient than I have experienced in the past, nor in the practitioner's competence. I was a nurse for 27 years, 18 of them on Community in York, and do know how to recognise the difference between a fungal rash and infection/inflammation ! On return home I made an immediate urgent appointment with my local GP who agreed today, 16 June, that all affected areas are bites and has prescribed Flucloxacillin 500mg, Betamethesone cream 0.1%, and Flxofenadine anti-histamine tablets.
