"Emergency Department"

About: Southmead Hospital

The a and e department is under staffed and there are not enough beds. There where ambulances queuing to hand over patients. A and E had no beds. Apparently at one point 12 ambulances waiting to hand over patients. Understaffed and not enough beds. Ambulance waiting times are appalling. I waited 3 hours for an ambulance to arrive. It is because all hanging around at the hospital. A and E needs to be twice the size. And this was a monday afternoon.

Dear Anonymous, Thank you for your comments regarding the new A&E department at Southmead Hospital. We are sorry that you found the service inadequate, as clearly this is not what we would want for any patient, and we are sorry that your experience has obviously caused you distress. We would wish to assure you that the department is busy at all itmes, but there are times which are busier than others due to the nature of the service provided. We can confirm that the department is appropriately staffed and that the staff would be working hard to ensure that patients are handed over from the ambulance crews as quickly as possible to enable the ambulances to be released. As with all new buildings, it is taking time to ensure that all of our processes are working well and we are paying a great deail of attention to this in order that things can improve quickly. It is not clear from your comments when you attended the A&E, and if you would like to contact us with further details so that we can investigate what happened then we would be happy to look into this for you. You can contact us at Complaints@nbt.nhs.uk or telephone us on 0117 3233710.
