"Horrible experience and late results"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

Had to visit this ward i April after an abnormal smear, I was fairly stressed out about the procedure as it was. Was not too amused to find a male doctor, medical student and three other members of staff in the room, the doctor himself I found very inappropriate making remarks about how 'having a child or two would loosen me up' after I had told him I was on the injection as I do not want children! I was then told it was three weeks for my results, worried about them for 3 weeks and then phoned up-was told I had been informed incorrectly and it was six weeks. After six weeks I had to phone again due to no results and was told by the receptionist that the results had been signed off by the doctor and that it said I required further treatment and that the results and next appointment letter had been sent out. It was nearly another week before I got that letter and was very stressed out after being told about needing treatment over the phone and then the letter not being sent straight away. Am at the stage of dreading going back for treatment and having to wait the min six weeks again for results. I understand that the smear test scheme is excellent for picking up things early however my experience of how the hospital deal with it afterwards is shockingly slow and draw out leaving me more worried!!

We are very sorry that you had a poor experience. The care that you describe is not of the standard that we would expect to give. If it would be of help we would like the opportunity to discuss what happened with you. Please contact our Patient Relations Team on 0118 322 8338 (email: talktous@royalberkshire.nhs.uk) and they will put you in touch with the appropriate person.
