This gentleman is an outgoing person, who leads a very active life for his age and although he has suffered from various forms of cancer over the last 6 years, feels very fit.
He has noticed over the last few years that he bruises easily but put that down to age and the fact he took aspirin. However in late May his wife noticed a very large bruise on his right arm. She was able to arrange an appointment on the Tuesday with GP, who arranged a blood test for the Friday.
He gave the sample at 11. 15am and at 8. 30pm the same night was summoned into Tameside Hospital. It was only when he was admitted to MAU he was told that his blood platelet reading was very low (3) and he was anaemic. Apparently his immune system was fighting his platelets. Had anyone in the chain – from his GP onwards – not done their jobs properly, he could have been in even greater danger healthwise.
