"Day Ward - 105"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital

Came in today at 8:00 as told on the letter, finally got admitted on to the ward at 10:00. All the members of staff seemed uncoordinated in their task roles and communication with the patients was almost non existent. My file was left at the bottom of my bed whilst I was there, but I was told I couldn't read it. However every nurse, orderly or trainee that seemed to come along and not speak to me felt free to read it at ease. One nurse stuck a load of stickers to pages in the file before realising that they were the wrong ones, at which point she tore them all out again. I witnessed patients coming back up from having their operations and there being little or no handover to the staff nurse. Then they waited an age to have their observations done and longer still to eat, drink or be allowed to go to the loo. There were a lot of patients who we're going to another ward after their operations and their belongings were stacked precariously at one end of the ward, causing a obsticle and possible hazzard. They didn't get sent anywhere else whilst I was there and people had their false teeth in them, so they were clearly going to be alarmed how long it was going to take to be reunited with their stuff. After waiting 6 hours I was told I could go home because my operation was cancelled. In that time the disorganised chaos of the day ward taught me that I'll be requesting another hospital for my operation. When are hospitals going to realise that all any of us patients want is communication, how long are we going to wait for out operation, who are all the nurses, what are their names, what are their roles and who's in charge. We should be asked how we are, regularly and put at ease. At no point as with my visit should the nurses all congregate at the end of the ward to chat, relax and gosip about patients. Also and most important of all, no one should be made to endure having to watch ITV on tele all day, especially Jeremy Kyle. That programme sums up the dumbing down of society today, basically if you're not an idiot in hospital and have half a brain, be prepared to be treated like a child all day long.
