I recently had my Gall Bladder removed at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital the surgeon Mr Wyman and his team including all the staff in the POSU (Post Operative Surgical Unit) were brilliant and cannot be faulted. However on return to ward K2 things went downhill. I found myself without my bed / belongings as the staff had given my bed away to another patient. And the staff wanted to put me into a corridor. POSU staff were going to take me back to their unit, however I was put into a side room which was filthy to say the least. Indeed my visitors (on of whom is a hospital cleaner at Weston Park) wanted to clean the room and suggested I sit on a carrier bag for hygeine purposes. There was no anti bacterial material at hand to fight germs etc. Whilst in this room I became aware of the confusion between the doctors and nursing staff i.e I had been put on a drip in a POSU. A few minutes after arriving on the ward a senior nurse came and removed the drip throwing the 3/4 full bag in the bin saying someone needed the stand urgently ( I had just been told I needed the drip). After a shortwhile I was transferred (during visiting time) to a permanent bed for the duration of my stay (my visitors had to help the staff move me and my belogings). In my opinion many of the staff on K2 seemed uncaring and indifferent to me whilst providing my care. This compares to the excellent proffessional care of the Surgical team and the POSU unit staff and also the staff at my previous stay in Ward K1 in November 2006 My husband phoned on the morning of my discharge to query my health and was told he could come and collect me, the nursing staff then proceeded to put me back on another drip. When my husband arrived I had been taken of the drip and was waiting for his arrival. On his arrival he felt he was not welcome and had to leave the ward untill my medication arrived over 3 hours later. See also this related comment
