"Honnest review of maternity ward"

About: Princess Royal University Hospital (Orpington)

I gave birth a couple of months ago at the PRUH. I was induced and had the epidural. I must say in the first stages of labour, I can't fault anything. I was taken in and assessed quickly. I asked for the epidural and the midwife was very clear in explaining when I would be able to get it, why and what would happen. I ended up having it a little earlier than planned as I was very sick. Everything went downhill from there. A new midwife took care of me in the last stage of labour but remained silent and gave us very few information the whole time. My partner and I were at a lost and absolutly panicked when people started to rush in to help the midwife and later the doctor.... I gave birth by ventouse and suffered a 3rd degree tear. Baby was healthy and I was stiched up promptly. We had to wait for 48hours for our baby to be seen by a pediatrician, although we had big concerns about our baby, mainly her feet were pointing at the wrong angle. We chased midwives several times a day and we were dismissed everytime. We then diagnosed ourselves that our baby was tongue-tied, even after the midwives examined her..... After we were sent home, we discovered a lump on her collar bone and xray showed that they had broken her collar bone when they delivered her and NO ONE noticed it! that's several midwives, pediatrician, healthvisitors! We raised a formal complaint and was replied they didn't have enough staff that day and there was no way they could have known it was broken! So how come, us as parents, not medicaly qualified identified that something was wrong?! We are very upset by our general experience at the PRUH and their failure to care for our baby in her early days. This will haunt us forever.
