Firstly let me say I was very satisfied with the speed that I was seen and dealt with. However, it was so quick that it was apparent that the individual departments struggled with their communication, so I was taken for plaster on foot after X-ray without seeing triage nurse again to be told it was definitely broken. Great speed but needed to be co-ordinated better. Saw X-ray eventually and all explained. In and out of a and e in 2 and half hours. I had Sustained foot injury which turned out to be broken 5th metatarsal. Reception staff very polite and calm fortunately I was first in que. however had I not been there was no where for me to perch to take weight off of foot. No one asked if they could help and even when nursing staff came to get me, there seemed to be some amazement that I could not walk. The wheelchair that wa finally found whilst I steadied myself on a doorway was not a light weight one and it would only go backwards I felt for the staff as it was so difficult to manoeuvre. Need some light weight chairs of some sort that. Can be used for people like me with minor injuries I had no one to help me. Staff were lovely efficient but ...Foot given temporary plaster and given crutches. Never having used these before I was very unsteady also with handbag left in wheelchair by reception window to book fracture clinic. Then nothing.... I had to get out off wheelchair to ring someone to pick up. I abandoned wheelchair by reception window as could not move it. reception staff did not comment on this or ask if I could manage. Struggled to the chairs by window where there is a small amount of mobile reception only to find no reception to be had !!! So had to catch reception staff attention the lady was again very biddable and came out to bring me chair and wheeled me outside to call and wit for lift. Please please please be aware that single people cannot always get help and not one person asked if I was going to manage at home. I am a professional intelligent person so can problem solve and sort my life out but my home is not designed for crutches and disability!! Should I have been helped over this by a and e I don't know but it would have been helpful to have been given contact numbers and hints and tips about how I can help myself at home. Fore instance you can get plastic covers for the cast so you can shower. That's if of course if you can get into shower in the first place!!!Please give more instruction on using crutches frankly this was pitiful and I have fallen twice since and twisted my good knee. I am not looking forward to fracture clinic trip. There is a long distance to get to it and I am not going to make it on crutches so will find out if wheelchair availble to get me there from entrance. In summary great individual care from each specialisation each det with what they neede to do in terms of diagnosis assessment and treatment but no holistic care with regards to me and my circumstances or advice about how to cope.
