"Thank you - for saving my life"

About: St Richard's Hospital

I was admitted via the 'Out of Hours Service' to the AMU and from there to Chievely ward. Here I was quietly informed that I was seriously unwell and suffering from Orbital Cellulitus. From the moment I was admitted I felt safe; akin to being in a warm, caring and highly professional nest. My temp was 103.8 - fans were switched on and the first of eleven IV's started in AMU. Nothing was too much trouble. The place was spotless & constantly cleaned. I was constantly reassured and my every need attended to. Even at night, when a patient was being very disruptive, the staff ensured that everyone else was becalmed by handing out earplugs! I found it amazing to wake at 6.30am to find a doctor standing by my bed. He thought he would "just check on me" - even though he had not left the ward before midnight! As he was there he arranged for the nurse to take my fasting bloods (it's 6.30am!) and get me a cup of tea. Not once did I feel ignored or neglected, indeed I saw a doctor every couple of hours and a nurse every few minutes. I will never be able to repay the staff for their care. They truly did save my life, although I was unaware of this until I was being discharged home and told just how serious things had been. Thank you to all the nursing staff on AMU & Chievely ward & to the doctor and his team of young doctors in the Oral & Max face Unit God bless you all
