About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

Terrible experience when my grandad was being "cared for" he had a major op to remove a tumer on his spine after the op he was dehydrated & went into a diabetic comer as no nurse him his insulin dusbite it being on his notes & he died. I had a missed miscarriage found out at my 12 week scan was sent to discuss what to do next but left in the waiting room for 2 hours untill I went to find someone as all receptionist & nurses had gone home & was then told I would have to wait 9 days to have a d &c. Had my daughter 8 weeks ago the midwifey unit were rude & didt listen to anything I said sent me home in agony wherw I gave birth in my bed with an ambulance@ then they missed evey appointment with me sometimes just not showinf up! Gave me ni brest feeding advise just left me to get on with it. My nan went into hosp where the nrses were rude & treated her as if she was nothing & new nothing! Left hee in a chair for hours & hours even though she repeatedly told them she was very uncomfortable. When we the family interviened we were snapped at & my nan mafe to feel as though she was complaining over nothing! This hospital is a discrase the staff are nothing but rude uncaring miserable & incompetent. I dread my next vist hopefuly it wont be for a very long time.

We have two trauma wards and one elective orthopaedic ward in the Royal Berkshire Hospital. From your feedback, it is difficult to know which ward your grandfather was treated on during his stay. We are very sorry for your loss and would welcome a more indepth discussion so we could investigate the care your grandfather received. The type of care you have described is not the quality that we expect and observe daily throughout the Orthopaedic Department. We are also sorry to hear of the problems that you experienced when you suffered a miscarriage. Whilst there are sometimes delays to be assessed in our early pregnancy unit, there is never a time when there are no nursing staff present, so we are concerned that this was your experience. With regards to the issues you raised regarding the maternity unit, we have various processes in place to ensure that women are seen in both the antenatal and postnatal period and we are worried that these appear to have failed. With regard to the lack of breastfeeding advice you were given, we can only apologise. All of our staff are trained to support women with breastfeeding, and in addition we have a specialised team who can offer support within the breastfeeding clinic once you have gone home. There have raised numerous concerns in your feedback and we would like to be able to investigate them in more detail. We want to ensure that the care you have described does not reoccur and to this end we would urge you to contact our Patient Relations Team on 0118 322 8338 (or email talktous@royalberkshire.nhs.uk) so we can investigate and learn from any errors.
