"2nd Polypectomy after 12 years"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted at 07.30 for a day stay. I was given a recliner to sit on. There was a locker to hang coats, but there was no rail so my coat was folded and put on the floor. The nursing staff appeared to be very young and inexperienced, apart from one nurse who seemed constantly harangued with questions from other staff. After I returned from the operation, I was settled on the recliner with a blanket. I was not advised that my nose may bleed, so when it did, I reached down for my bag to get tissues. I bled on the arm of the recliner and the floor, which I mopped up. Only when a passing nurse noticed the tissues was anything provided for me to bleed onto. My temperature was never taken once. Blood pressure was done prior to the operation and once before I left other than that no 'obs' were carried out. I asked if I could go home, as no-one had indicated when I could leave. I had to ask about doucing, as the surgeon had said it was essential, but none of the nurses knew anything about it. I was given a starter kit, which should have contained 5 sachets but only contained 2. I as not offered or given any food. I brought a banana with me, which was all I needed.

I think the staff do a brilliant job under difficult circumstances. There do not seem to be enough trained staff, and too many students who do not know what they are doing. I cannot see any advantage of recliners over beds. Clearly, if there is an epidemic, beds are found so it's not a capital expense. Blankets and pillows are provided, so the only thing missing is a sheet, which would have prevented a stain on the arm of the recliner which I am sure is still there. Extra day patients I know put a strain on resources, so please provide the nurses with some experienced help.
