"Admission and surgery via A&E"

About: Watford General Hospital / Accident and emergency Watford General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I am a disabled person and already spine condition patient with degenerative disk disease and have had prior surgery at RNOH Stanmore.

Fell on front door step putting out the rubbish! Complex bi- ankle break and broken ribs. A&E admission and surgery at Watford for ankle.

My broken ribs were not checked despite complaining about extreme pain. But some of the staff were great, they were friendly and caring.

On the down side I had no help going home when discharged and there were a shortage of gowns, blankets and pillows.

Thank you for taking the time to let us have feedback about the care you received from our team at Watford Hospital.

I'd like to start by saying I'm sorry to hear about your fall and that you needed to be brought into hospital.

I was concerned to read that we had not checked your ribs as this would be standard procedure if you were complaining of pain.

In addition, I am concerned to hear that there was a shortage of gowns, blankets and pillows. I know we regularly monitor stock levels and there should not have been a shortage.

I would like to be able to look into this further for you. That way we can find out why we didn't check your ribs and explain about the gowns, blankets and pillows.

To do this, I will need to know when you were admitted and to which ward.

With this in mind, it would be very helpful if you could please contact our patient advice and liaison service (PALS). They will be able to investigate what happened and, importantly, let you (and me) have feedback.

Our PALS team can be called on 01923 217 198 or you can email pals@whht.nhs.uk.

Thank you again for taking the time to let us have feedback and for your kind remark about our staff being caring and friendly.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need to. My email is antony.tiernan@whht.nhs.uk or you can call me on 01923 436 229. Alternatively, you can tweet me: @AntonyTiernan.
