"Very unhappy with the care given to Dementia..."

I am writing this for my dear husband who passed away in Quince ward on 21.01.14 he was only 64. My husband came into A&E with a water infection and high temperature and after 11 days he had Septis, Blister burns on his right hand and arm from a Cannula that was not checked so the antibiotic went under his skin and burnt him, he also had bedsores that had not been treated correctly. I was also told that due to the fact that my husband had Frontal Lobe Dementia a DNR had been placed on his records, which I made complaints about. I was told that his medication was stopping and so I made more complaints to doctors and they started them again. My husband picked up and was starting to feel and look better. I washed him shaved him and feed him. I was always calling for the nurses to give him meds and also move him etc as they would not check him for hours. I also had to tell them to change his pads and change his bed etc. The daily ward doctors had a lot of time for the patients, but the night doctors and the weekend doctors had no time and just did not want to be asked questions. Some of the nursing staff were great and others just did not care and I know that they did not want me to be with my husband all the time. I have been my husband full time carer for 5 years so I made sure I know what they were doing to him. My husband may have had mid stage dementia, he still had a good quality of life. Going to his clubs and his allotment and various other things he enjoyed. The staff would not listen to me. I stayed with my husband day and night in a room on this ward only going home to wash and change clothes when my sister came in to sit with my husband. I was told not to feed my husband or I could risk feed him. I had arranged a palliative care package to take my husband home to care for him and it had been sorted out and he would have been ready to go home on Thursday 23.01.14, but sadly my husband choked to death while I was with him and the staff just watched and did not resuscitate. I will be writing an official complaint and also making all the dementia organisations aware of the treatment of patients with Dementia and also the poor care of the elderly who cannot speak up for themselves.
