I self-referred to the Early Intervention in Psychosis team which is based in Ashington and not at St Georges. I don't think they have anything to do with the hospital but I was told I had Anxiety and not Psychosis and was referred to the Northumberland Psychological Wellbeing Service who conduct consultations at St Georges. With Early Intervention I liked that I did not have to go to a hospital setting which was a nice, happy, happy thing. They told me I had anxiety and that I would not have to go 'anywhere near a hospital' and that it was rare even for people with psychosis to have to go to a hospital, treatment in a community setting being more appropriate. This is ,of course, a specific approach to psychology/psychiatry. I also liked how the letters were not franked and left blank which was nice and subtle and that it was run out of a community centre and not a hospital, they even visited my house. However, upon being referred to the Northumberland Psychological Wellbeing Service I discovered that I had to go to St Georges Hospital for a consultation for a less extreme illness, not only that but it was franked Northgate Hospital. It is shocking that some services are franked with Northgate Hospital and not others. One could only conclude that anxiety is a hospital-worthy illness and psychosis isn't. I can't imagine any other possible conclusion within my grasp.
