"Orthopedic treatments"

About: Berwick Infirmary

I had a plaster cast fitted in Portugal after dislocating a finger. The cast was to be removed after 3 weeks..despite the new orthopedic unit set up to avoid patients having to travel to Wansbeck, I was advised I could not have it done in Berwick Infirmary. . My neighbour aged 83 broke her wrist. Berwick infirmary would/could not even look at it. She was sent to Wansbeck via hospital car 1-1/2 hrs (12.15) later it having come from Newcastle Airport. She got home via Blyth at 8.30 pm distressed and in pain. She had to go again to Wansbeck a few days later for X-ray. Again they would not do it in Berwick? That time she came home via Rothbury feeling sick. She now has to have the cast taken off in Wansbeck. A total of 330 miles..this in no way places blame on hospital staff or the invaluable car service.. Northumbria Health Service are to blame for cutting the services and treatments here in Berwick..disgraceful.

Dear Gordon Thank you for sharing your experience care at Berwick Infirmary. I am aware that you have left a second review relating to this. I hope you don't mind but I have responded to the issues you raise on the second review. With regard to your neighbour. I am very sorry to learn that they have not had a good experience. It is difficult to provide a personal response as to why their care has been provided at Wansbeck Hospital due to anonymous nature of the review. We do provide services into Berwick with 2 Consultant orthopaedic surgeons who travel to Berwick to provide clinics and review patients. A falls clinic is also provided at Berwick and they do provide x-ray services. I would like to offer my assistance to your neighbour to understand why their care was provided at WGH, resulting in the need for travel. If they feel this would be helpful please ask them to contact me at Annie.laverty@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk Best Wishes Annie
