"Varicose vein surgery - brilliant"

About: Royal United Hospital

The Day Surgery intake room was crowded and chaotic when we arrived at 7.20am but staff were kind and doing their best in the circumstances. There were not enough rooms for nurses, anaesthetists and doctors but somehow they managed cheerfully and I was processed quickly to go to theatre. Everyone there was chatty and kind and in what seemed like no time I woke up in recovery where again staff could not do enough for me. After some time there I was taken to the next recovery ward and given a cup of tea followed by a very nice lunch and dessert. I received nothing by kindness and respect in all the time until I was able to go home later in the afternoon. I could not fault them. At home I looked for advice on recovery and was amazed to find there is no consistent advice, each site giving differing ideas on "discomfort" and wearing support stocking. Eventually I found one that tells it like it is - painful despite wall-to-wall painkillers! - and with a realistic recovery time and I am now able to walk with just a little pain.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent surgical admission to the RUH and your experience at the hospital. All feedback is useful as it helps us to identify problems and improve the quality of our service and care. The anaesthetics and general surgical departments have compiled a number of information leaflets for patients that should hopefully contribute to a better patient experience and give patients a better understanding of what to expect post-surgery. We would be happy to forward these to you for your information if you feel they may still be useful. If you would like to receive them, please can you contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01225 825656 or via email at ruh-tr.PatientAdviceandLiaisonService@nhs.net We wish you a continued and pain-free recovery from your Day Surgery. We will forward on your comments to the staff in General Surgery, whom I'm sure will be very grateful for your kind words.
