"Hysteroscopy without anaesthetic / pain relief"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

After asking a number of people in the hospital as to where the clinic actually was as this is not clearly displayed in the hospital nor on the information leaflet sent to you I had the above procedure done yesterday. I was expecting to feel some slight discomfort after reading the information that was sent to me and had already taken two pain killers prior, but the pain I felt was excruciating, so much so I had to stop the doctor twice! This I found quite distressing and near on unbearable and was shocked and upset by it, the information leaflet had only mentioned slight cramping/period pains The whole process felt rushed and chaotic, with one nurse on one side, trying to take your mind off what was going on, by asking questions, whilst the other was showing you a diagram on a paper and pointing to the monitor so you could see in real - all at the same time. The doctor asked after if I had any questions and all I could answer was no, just let me get out if here. Please: more time, more care, more consideration and above all anaesthetics!

Dear Anonymous, I cannot imagine how difficult this must have been for you and want to apologise for the pain and distress we have caused you. It is very disappointing to note that that attempted communication with you did not pick up on your evident distress and that we did not detect the pain and shock you were experiencing. As you describe "more time, more care and more consideration" should and could have been given to you to express the need for pain relief, to answer your questions, to respond to the shock you were in. So, in order to investigate what happened I have escalated your concerns to the Clinical Director and Head of Nursing for Women's Services and would ask that you get in touch with us so we can take some immediate next steps. We would be very grateful if you were able to get in touch with a member of the Patient Experience Team, we are available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 01279 827084. We are ready to take your call.
