"Awful endometriosis care."

About: Monklands District General Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I have suffered from extremely painful periods since I was 14 and put on the pill to 'even them out'. Unfortunately, four years ago I was unable to walk or sit up during my periods on the pill. Thinking it was the pill, they changed it and things got worse. Eventually I was referred to Monkland's District Hospital for a scan to check for cysts on my ovaries. Nothing showed up on the external ultrasound, so I was referred for a laparoscopy last year which confirmed I had endometriosis.

The nurses at the time of surgery were great. But my treatment since my diagnosis has been awful. I have been put on a severe form of hormone treatment against my wishes. I discovered that the hospital seems to have skipped several of the ERHS guidelines for the treatment of endometriosis, including the fact that they should have removed all the endometrial tissue while performing my laparoscopy under the supervision of a colon specialist. On top of this I felt I was as much as told by a consultant to either have a baby or a hysterectomy if I was going to keep complaining about pain. Of course they couched it in words so that I couldn't pull them up about it at the time. I was also visibly upset by the idea of having a hysterectomy at such a relatively young age, but I felt they couldn't get me out of the door quickly enough. I've now written a formal complaint and here's hoping I stop feeling like I am getting blamed for having a chronic illness I have no control over.

Dear MsLanark

We realise the importance of involving patients and where appropriate their families when planning and deciding treatment. It is also essential that you are provided with information to allow you to make informed choices about your treatment and care. Clearly the decisions you faced were difficult and I'm very sorry you didn't feel supported by staff.

I'm pleased to hear you felt the nursing care you received was good but I am concerned that you feel you have not had the right treatment and dismayed that you feel you are having treatment against your wishes.

We will investigate and respond to your formal complaint, but if you would like to give me a call in the meantime so that we can discuss your current situation, I would be pleased to hear from you.

My telephone number is 01236 712314

Kind Regards
