"lack of communication and respect"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital

(as a relative),

My elderly but extremely active (mentally & phisically) father spent much of the last days of his life in the Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. Communication was poor at every level so even though we asked it seemed that no one really knew what his treatment was. Where was his designated nurse or a doctor willing to explain? He was finally discharged with two infected biopsy sites despite telling the staff - and it turned out to be MRSA. So he was unwell when returned home and had to rely on my mother and GP services to pick up the pieces - he died a couple of weeks later. This is the first time we have felt such a lack of care - ageism possibly creeping in. He did tell me that one of the staff had on one occasion called him "a stupid old man". I am an ex nurse and I know how much better his experience could have been despite the pressures on the NHS.
