"Some excellent individuals overall would not..."

About: Cheltenham General Hospital

After being referred to a&e from the gp the care in this department was excellent, established very quickly I was seriously ill with pneumonia and started oxygen therapy, fluids and monitored me closely. I had a brief stay in acu before being transferred to a respiratory ward. Here I experienced the most incompetent consultant who only put me on a short course of antibiotics that was stopped after 5 days and should have been at least 10 - 14 days. My frustration is immense as my condition improved after 2 - 3 days on them and deteriorated just as rapidly when I stopped them. Despite both myself and my partner explaining our concerns about this it was just brushed under the carpet and most frustrating of all I was kept in another 4 days for monitoring my asthma so plenty of opportunity was there to complete a proper course. My scheduled painkillers were late and when my partner queried this after it caused me to have a really bad night where I stopped breathing the sister restricted my partner visiting to the minimum visiting hours despite me being in a side room and her having to travel considerable distance to visit me and no prior restrictions. I feel this was done purely to assert authority and control as she had to account for the error. I was prescribed morphine based painkillers every 1-2 hours as requested to manage the pneumonia and allow me to cough deeply and thus clear the mucus - I was commonly waiting in excess of an hour after requesting for these instant release painkillers particularly after the previously mentioned incident. Night staff were much better and usually sorted them for me within 10 minutes unless there was an emergency which of course I completely understand. I experienced an excellent physiotherapist during my stay who actually took time to answer my questions and explain ct and xray results etc and showed me techniques to help me breathe. He also referred me to the pain clinic who followed me up regularly during my stay and did their best to control the pain - this would probably have been successful had I been given a proper course of antibiotics and the care you would hope to receive from a consultant - his juniors were more efficient and helpful! One nice young female junior in particular wanted to follow me up in outpatients and look at my lung functioning - he didn't feel this was necessary. After 3 weeks of struggling at home with copious amounts of painkillers I was readmitted to another hospital still with pneumonia and started antibiotics from scratch again having been told the previous course was never going to be long enough. I am now waiting for oxygen therapy assessment as my condition has deteriorated so drastically. As someone who has paid into the system all their life and will not seek medical support unless absolutely necessary i'm disgusted and appalled at the treatment I experienced and the significant impact this has had on my health and well being.
