"Induction on Quantock"

About: Southmead Hospital

I had my 3rd child at Southmead in January 2014. On the whole, I was really impressed. The hospital is spotless, there were lots of staff; both midwives and doctors. I felt very well cared for by kind, caring & considerate staff. The facilities on Quantock let the side down though. For those women who have watched One Born Every Minute, specifically women being induced..be warned...you will not get your own room. In some ways this can be an advantage as at least there are other people to raise the alarm for you whilst you are in the early stages of labour, however the negative sides are as follows:: - Partners are sent home at night time (they are allowed to stay at St Michaels). Surely this is now an out of date practice? - I was laboring in an open ward with 3 other women plus their partners & birth partners able to see me...this was nothing short of humiliating. I kept asking to be sent to delivery but was offered a bath instead, I assume because there was no space in delivery at the time. - Once in the bath, the noise of the repair work on the other bathrooms was deafening. I will forever associate the sound of drilling with labouring. There are 3 bathrooms on Quantock, only 1 with a bath. As the other 2 bathrooms were being repaired & I was in the only other bath, the door was constantly being knocked bu others wishing to use it. - There are no mats in central delivery to enable you to birth on the floor. Due to SPD, I couldn't get onto the bed so ther was a slight panic as the midwife wasn't sure what to do as i gave birth standing up. - I had a fantastic experience due to the attitude of the staff there. the midwives were great. If my fairy godmother could grant me 1 wish, it would be for more private rooms for ladies on induction & a maintenance team who stay on top of repair work so that you can manage repairs with the impact on those labouring on Quantack, there must be a better way to manage repair work on a word where there are cinstantky women in labor.

Dear Anonymous – thank you for your feedback about the care you received on Quantock Ward at Southmead Maternity Unit. I am sorry that the building work impacted on your experience at this very special time, but I was pleased to learn that the midwives and nursing support you received was so positive. Your comments have been passed on to all the departments and staff concerned, particularly in respect of the building work. Kind regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team.
