"My brother's care: from worse to ridiculous"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Cardiology Princess Alexandra Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My story concerns my brother Dave, who was admitted to Harlow hospital in August, with what was then diagnosed as an ulcerated foot. During the next five months, Dave has experienced two heart attacks, had a triple by-pass delayed due to the infection still being present in his foot and has now been told that he may have liver failure. During this time he has seen his consultant only a limited amount of times for fleeting five minute discussions. So far not one person, be it a consultant, a doctor or a hospital administrator, has had the professional etiquette to sit his family down and explain to us why this has taken so long, with still no light at the end of the tunnel after five months. Dave is the one going through hell at the moment, and as a family we are all praying he comes through this. But feedback is as important to family and friends as it is to the patient. As a final point, the complaints department needs to evaluate whether a call left not once, not twice, but four times, warrants a courtesy response, or to be ignored as my calls have been.
