About: Southmead Hospital

My husband had an appointment for an endoscopy. I drove from Weston-Super-Mare and allowed plenty of time. We arrived at 9.30 and went to the multi storey car park. It was full and people were waiting for spaces. I checked the other car parks and they were also full. Eventually I had to drop off my husband which I was reluctant to do as he is in great pain. I continued with my search and ended up at the new A&E car park where I was informed that although there were spaces I could not park there as it was not open. When the attendant realised I had tried everywhere else he offered to move his car so that I could use his space. By the time I found where my husband was undergoing treatment he had already been called in. The staff on this ward were excellent but the whole experience was marred by the lack of parking. Why hasn't this been sorted out before the problem arose? A hospital visit is stressful enough without worrying about where to park. Unfortunately I have an appointment tomorrow and all I am worried about is the parking as I am driving on my own so cannot be dropped off.

Response from Southmead Hospital

Dear Pound – thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your comments about your visit to Gastrointestinal and Liver Services at Southmead Hospital. I am very sorry that you encountered such difficulties with parking. Thank you for your kind comments about the ward staff this will be shared with them. Unfortunately, the current building works are at a phase where parking is reduced to the minimum planned level, before it is again increased. Regrettably, space on the site is finite and this means that currently parking spaces have fallen to a level well below that which we would like to provide. Our plans do include increased parking on site at Southmead for our visitors and this will be provided once the New Brunel Hospital building opens and demolition of the old hospital building get underway. A further increase will again be provided when our second multi-story car park is completed in 2015. When you visit Southmead Hospital again at the end of April, if you cannot find a space please ring our parking team who will try and assist; their number is 0117 323 5023. Our parking officers carry out regular patrols and can contact other patrols on site to enquire where vacant spaces are located and then immediately direct you. Once again, I do apologise for the current unavoidable pinch-point in the car parking arrangements on the Southmead site. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
