"Nursing care"

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital

I was admitted to A&E on the9th April. Not realising how very seriously Ill I was the staff on duty were professional, caring, and treated me urgently. I was then put on 10a observation ward for a week. During my stay on that ward the staff were caring, respectful, and conscientious. I did not have to wait for pain relief, and all my needs were met. However, I was then put on a ward for the frail and elderly. I'm retired, and I was frail, but I do not suffer from dementia, and almost all the patients were suffering from dementia. During this stay they closed the ward because of suspected infection of two patients, instead of removing the patients concerned the rest of us had to stay in the ward with a high risk of this spreading. I understand how stretched the NHS is, however, the level of care, and respect was appalling. I was without pain relief after asking for it and then being told they were too busy to administer it. Four hours later when night staff came on duty I was given my medication. I see the problem as no continuity takes place, no notes are written up therefore, things are missed. I have seen the two levels of nursing, the observation ward was first class, but wards 9a and 9b it was as if the staff just wanted to get through their day, do the job and get home. I am grateful to the hospital as I know they saved my life, also that nothing is perfect, but respect for patients is paramount , nobody want to have to stay in hospital, everyone at sometime will have to, so share a thought for the patients , most of them I'll otherwise they wouldn't be there.
