What I liked
I was unfortunate enough to develop a Pilonidal (i think that is the correct term) abscess which very quickly crippled me. After being Fine on the friday by the monday i was unable to sleep , lay on any surface of my body other than my sides, drive, walk and could not sit. After managing to get a emergency appointment to see my GP he referred me to Ward 6 at HRI, I was actually admitted to Ward 60. The staff were well informed by my GP and had a bed prepared and a nurse ready to admit me. After spending considerable time (or what felt like) answering the admission questions the nurses had me a gown brought over and had started to get me ready for theatre. Within a couple of hours I had bloods taken and on a drip and pain killers. The nurses where very caring and made regular observations due to me developing a high temperature. Unfortunatly due to other long going operations my operation got cancelled twice. On the morning of my third day in hospital i was operated on and back on the ward, a bit confused but significantly better and less a big lump in a inconvienient place. The nursing staff through out were outstanding and I wish to praise them fully as they were very understanding, discreet, respectful and proffessional. I was discharged a day after the operation, the nurses had organised a nurse to call daily to attend my dressing.
What could be improved
Enforcement of visitors using the gel stations, the number of people that just walk by was upsetting because they would be the first to complain if there relative was to become ill to a "superbug".
Anything else?
On another note, cleanliness on ward60 was spot on , the days I was admitted the ward was cleaned at least twice a day.
