"Mental Health"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

I've suffered from Bulimia since the age of twelve and became depressed in 2012. I was prescribed antidepressants which made me more suicidal. I overdosed last year at the age of eighteen and after a lot of throwing up/saline drip was much better physically however I was made to stay in the ward against my wishes. During my short time there, I was humiliated by the staff on the ward saying I did it for attention and was told by a mental health professional that I wasn't unwell and that 'a lot of girls' go through problems at my age. Reflecting on this now I'm on the road to recovery, I am astounded at the lack of understanding and an unwillingness to help displayed by these so called 'professionals'. I also witnessed my sister receive similar treatment when she had a psychotic episode in September 2013. It took her a month and a half to be admitted when it was clear she was very unwell Schizoaffective disorder and they only took her in after she'd tried to kill herself twice. Luckily, she too is much better now but I can't say the Royal Infirmary had any hand in that. I understand that bed space is limited but why you can't act when it is so very clear that individuals like my sister would suffer if they were to be sent home is perplexing.

Dear reviewer, Thank you for taking the time to post your comment. We are very sorry to hear of your experience at the Royal. This is not the level of care we expect our patients to receive and would like the opportunity to look into your case further to ensure it does not happen again. If you are happy for us to do so, please could you send your details (full name, address, date of birth and hospital number) to communications@uhl-tr.nhs.uk. We value your feedback as it will help us to improve our services for the future. Kind regards, Communications team Leicester’s Hospitals
