I was admitted for urosepsis, which rendered me somewhat incontinent. I had to use the loo often and due to my condition, it was not realistic to use the bottle. The loo nearest me was not cleaned for at least 36 hours as I had an accident early in my stay, and told the nurse on night duty. The urine pool and stain was still there the next night. Once a different patient had a serious mess in it, and there was bits of defecation on the walls for a whole day. (A poor attempt had been made to clean it up, but it was just not thorough. The toilet paper dispenser was not fixed the entire time I was there (3 full days). Most staff wanted to be helpful. I would like to especially commend 2 staff nurses in AMU. Both of them showed a deep commitment to the patients' welfare. One of them displayed an exceptionally effective bedside manner with some very difficult patients. Many of the staff, perhaps well over 50%, speak English with varying degrees of poor proficiency. I would recommend that some programme be made available to the poorest speakers because frustration in communication especially with elderly clients could be life threatening.
"Very good A&E, AMU was chaos"
