"emergency admission/subsequent release and..."

About: East Surrey Hospital

My wife was admitted with a heart attack which proved to be minor rather than major. Treatment in this instant was first rate and the family had no complaint. However, after a week she was deemed fit to return home despite being in considerable pain. Within 2 hours she was on her way back to hospital via the ambulance service being in a state of collapse. Unfortunately, as well as the heart problem she had also broken her right arm some three days before. Also, she has a shoulder and neck problem for over a year. The family requested that as she was back in that the fracture clinic look at the wrist but because it was originally dealt with by the Qeen Vic at East Grinstead they would not dealwith it. She has been released from the East Surrey but had to return there for guess what - Fracture Clinic - because the Queen Vic could not give her an appointment for some 3+ weeks time.. My gripe therefore is not with the nursing staff but the "pen pushers" who seem to have the ultimate control.

Dear anonymous

I am very sorry to hear about you wife's troubles and am glad that her first attendance went well.

You are quite right that our services should be "patient-centred", mearning that if you asked for fracture clinic review as an inpatient that should have occured as it would have been the right thing to do for your wife.

If you are able to send me you details by email to ben.mearns@sash.nhs.uk I can look into your case and then we can ensure the teams concerned learn from the experience.

I will ensure that your feedback is shared to make sure that we do better next time.

Kindest regards

Dr Ben Mearns
