What I liked

Admitted at 2am with abdominal pain / suspected kidney stones via NEMS to Harvey 2 ward. Doctor who did my initial assesment was very throrough and professional. After assesment, a bed was ready within 10 minuites. Saw the consultant the following morning, and had x-ray later that afternoon - all very efficient. The ward was clean, although the toilets / showers looked somewhat dated. All staff used the hand gel whenever they were in contact with patients.

What could be improved

A nurse seemed unwilling to consult a doctor when I explained my pain releif was having no effect, so after two or three short conversations, I gave up. Discharge, when it came, seemed a little rushed, with little information given as to follow up tests. A letter with this information was sent within a few days though. I had to wait for over 8 hours for meds to be ready before discharge.

Anything else?

Having to wait such a long time for meds, especially when they are commonplace, and readily available (with a prescription) from local pharmacies, is unpleasent for the patient, and takes up a bed needlesley.

Thank you for getting in touch with us to let us know about your experiences during your time at the hospital.

We are doing a lot of work to improve patient experiences across the Trust, including on Harvey 2 ward. As part of this work we are looking at a system which will enable some nurses to dispense patient medication prior to discharge. This will help to reduce the amount of time patients wait to be discharged from hospital.

With regards to the condition of the toilets and showers, we are pleased to inform you that Harvey 2 ward is undergoing a total refurbishment which started at the end of December 2008 and is due for competition within the next couple of months.
