"Worst experience"

About: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

I had my first baby at NHH last year. I must say I was very unhappy with the experience. It was in fact very traumatic. Firstly, when I had my Canular put in. They left the metal needle in my hand and would not believe me that I could bend my wrist from pain. During my labour, my babys heart rate was dropping with every contraction, when they broke my waters, it was discoloured showing my baby was in distress. My midwife didn't do anything. Other midwives were coming in and out looking at the readings and saying something was wrong, but she told them it was only the way I was laying. When a doctor came to review me, my midwife failed to disclose all the information and said the baby was not in distress and therefore the doctors left. I was given no choice about what to do. She didn't even explain it to me, she talked around me and ignored me. When she went on her break, she was late back and another midwife took over for the birth. She called a doctor as she could tell something was wrong and they said a x section was the safest option. But by then baby was too far on his way down so I gave birth naturally. It turned out that my son had a true knot on his cord which was starving him of oxygen. Explaining his dropping heart rate. Luckily, he was ok, A second midwife commented, that someone must have been looking down on him. He is very lucky to have gotten through the 24 hour labour. My original midwife came back from break to clean me up and do my stitches. She got my partner to check she had done them right and to get the equipment she had forgotten. She then tried to get me to stand way before I was ready after an epidural. At which point I fell. My care was transferred in the morning on the shift change. As it turned out it hadn't even had the sheets under me removed. I hadn't been cleaned up. My son was very poorly when we brought him home. Very mucusy and after calling the post natal ward we were informed it was due to the stressful birth, and we should have been informed before leaving how to handle it. Overall I found what should have been a wonderful experience was terrifying. Don't get me wrong I don't blame the hospital. I blame the midwife I had. I am pregnant again and very worried about who I will get.
