My husband ( with Alzheimers') was admitted with UTI; we visited on a Sunday afternoon - he was completely helpless at this stage - to find him half out of bed, bedclothes rumpled - he was lying on bare rubber mattress - he had no pyjama bottoms on, and was exposed to all and sundry - bedside table well out of reach, he was unable to ask for help; so water was unavailable, his mouth was very dry and crusted. He couldn't move himself or talk, or gesture.. When staff were informed the staff nurse said it was nothing to do with her because she had only just arrived, it was left to my son and self to straighten bed and put on his pyjama trousers and give him water, of which he drank four plastic pots full. The thing that made me most angry was the fact that staff walked past his bed regularly to get to the sluice and other facilities and had obviously ignored him . Complaints were made to PATS (?) ,a conciliatory letter was received from them; LRI was lucky that we didn't take this further, often wondered whether if we should have. We refused to let him go into this hospital when he had further turns - the nursing home treated him sympathetically and with compassion, which was absent on the ward (Odames). I just hope I will never be in the situation where I need to go into this place.
